Differential Setup
Ring and pinion sets, carriers, lockers and limited slips. Precise assembly and adjustment so the drivetrain runs smoothly and reliably, then proven over heat cycles.
What it is
Set to spec, then proven.
Setting up a differential is timely work. It takes precise assembly and adjustment of the mechanical components so the drivetrain operates smoothly and reliably.
We start by ordering the components specific to the vehicle’s front or rear axle size and to your preference, unless you supply them for the job. Before any work starts the housing is inspected for damage, cleaned, and checked for proper alignment. Then the work begins. That can include installing a new ring and pinion gear set, determining and installing the correct carrier, and setting gear backlash, pinion depth and bearing preload. Depending on the intended use and the type of vehicle, the differential may be equipped with an electronic or manual locker, or a limited-slip, to help distribute power when one wheel starts to lose traction.
It reads simpler than it is. The technician may repeatedly remove and re-install components, add, remove or change shims, check gear patterns, and verify bearing preload and backlash until the measurements are right. After final assembly the housing is sealed, filled with the specified gear oil, and inspected for leaks and gear noise by running the vehicle through heat cycles.
| Gear backlash | Set and verified |
|---|---|
| Pinion depth | Set and verified |
| Bearing preload | Set and verified |
| Gear pattern | Checked, and re-checked after any shim change |
| Carrier | Determined for the axle and the intended use |
| Traction device | Electronic locker, manual locker or limited-slip, to suit the use |
- Axle make and model, front or rear
- Gear set, if you are supplying it
- Whether the axle is in the vehicle or on a stand
- Any noise or history you can describe
- Tire diameter and whether you tow, if you are choosing a ratio
- How the vehicle gets used, if you are choosing a traction device
Not sure about any of it? Ring the shop and we will walk you through it.
The first 1,000 miles matter.
There is a break-in period on a fresh setup. Getting it wrong is the fastest way to undo good work.
- Do not haul with the vehicle
- Do not take long trips
- Bring it back at 1,000 miles for a fluid change
Correct wear during break-in is what makes the setup last. It is a short inconvenience for a long-lasting product.
Straight answers
What people ask about this.
It whines on acceleration but not coasting.
That points at pinion depth and pattern. Coast-side noise points somewhere else. Which side it whines on is genuinely useful, so pay attention to it before you call.
Do I need new bearings every time?
Not always, but if a set has been run loose or hot, reusing it is false economy. We will show you what came out.
What ratio for 37s?
Depends on your transmission and what you do with it. There is a common answer and there is the right answer for your truck, and they are not always the same. Ring us with the three things above.
Selectable or automatic?
If it sees pavement most of the week, selectable. If it is a dedicated trail rig and budget matters, automatic is hard to beat. That is the short version; call for the long one.
